Lucy McGoldrick – Translucent Photography
Tell us about yourself… I’m a wedding and portrait/lifestyle photographer based in the Illawarra, NSW.
Tell us about your business… . I launched my business in 2011 when I was living in Brisbane. At that point in time I was just capturing families and couples, between Brisbane, Townsville and Wollongong. I’ve just passed my 3 year milestone as a wedding photographer, where I truly found my passion for capturing love.
Describe a typical day in the life of Translucent Photography? On days that I am shooting, my days involve caffeine and a solid meal, particularly if prior to a wedding. I aspire to be an incredibly organised person, so I make sure all my gear is fully prepared for the next days events the night before. On days that I’m not shooting, you’ll find me in front of my screens, editing away, whilst binging my shows on netflix.
What inspires you? I’m inspired by a lot of things. I’m inspired by the works of other photographers. I’m inspired by other local businesses too, not always creative based too – I just really find go-getters and those who conquer hurdles professionally really eye opening, as day-day business can be really tough so it’s great to know that others endure the same sort of struggles across varying industries.
Why is your work different to other photographers? I really aspire to bring out the raw emotion and real connections in my subjects. I have cues to assist to bring these emotions out in my clients – I totally get that being in front of the camera can be a daunting thing! But with these cues and just getting to know my clients, the walls of awkwardness are just torn down and by the end of the vast majority of my sessions, we end up parting ways as friends.
Tell us about one of your favourite Southern Highlands venues to shoot and why? I love Sylvan Glen! Such a relaxed country vibe, and the most detail oriented place I think I’ve ever stepped foot in. It just has everything! The owners have put so much effort into the venue, and their efforts truly show. It’s such a gorgeous tucked away venue.
Favourite soundtrack to listen to while you’re working? I’m a triple J girl if I’ve got tunes playing while I’m editing, but usually for me I like a good Netflix binge while I edit. Even when I was at uni studying (I have a bachelor of marine biology – random fun fact!) I would study for my assessments and finals with netflix on.
What is your favourite part of any wedding? My favourite part of the wedding is seeing the love! The warm hugs of guests who may have gone years without catching up. The proud smiles of parents and grandparents as they watch on for their son/daughter or grand son/daughter commit their lives to the love of their life. The connections between people and the emotions that come with a wedding day. These are my favourite!
Any stand out moments from weddings you have photographed this year? Again for me, seeing the connections between people, and the emotions that follow. However, in an elopement I captured of an old friend of mine, he did rock up in the Batmobile. That’s definitely a highlight!
