Emma McGill – Emma McGill Makeup
Tell us about yourself… A true local to the southern highlands having grown up here, my love of our beautiful region is ever growing but always there. My passion for hair, makeup and tanning truly took off when I first set foot into The Art and Technology of Makeup College (3arts) for my application interview. An enchanted place full of marvelous creatives and endless options. I am a self employed stay at home mum to our ever so cheeky little one year old. Some days can be a struggle keeping the right balance, but I love my job and family so much and everything is worth it!
Tell us about your business… I’ve been in operation for approximately seven years. During this time Ive also had a Monday to Friday job, and contracted for another makeup artist. Immediately after finishing college in 2009 I located a fabulous local makeup artist to assist/contract for and stumbled across Yvette of Ethix. A makeup artist with over two decades of mixed industry experience- TV, Fashion, Film and of course Bridal. Having yvette as a mentor greatly aided my skill, confidence and passion as well as giving me a step up in the local industry and many fabulous opportunities and connection, as well as a friendship. With her encouragement I set up my own business – properly with Facebook, website, and eventually Instagram. I continued my Monday to Friday job as well as my own business until two and a half years ago, before be solely self employed and empowered in my passion.
Describe a typical day in the life of Emma McGill Makeup…
Weekdays:- Paperwork/emails, mixed with raising my one year old and keeping our house hold running whilst hubby works in Sydney and is away for 13hrs (or more) per day. Some days also include bridal trials and spray tanning appointments and most weekends consist of at least one wedding.
What inspires you? The love of the couples I get to work with and the joy I get to share in at each wedding. Artistically I find inspiration from other artists, and nature. To me natural beauty, in ALL its forms is best.
Why is your work different to other makeup artists? A combination of professional training, experience in a variety of industries and the influence of my mentors/teacher over the years has provided me with a multitude of skills- adapting a desired look to each individual, to make you look and feel beautiful and most importantly still look like yourself both on camera and off. My work is based on a combination of an individuals natural beauty and desired look.
Favourite soundtrack to listen to while you’re working? Nature…. most of the time I’ll have the window open so I can hear the birds or rain outside. Otherwise I have an eclectic mix of songs, mainly love songs, that shuffle through on loop.
What is your favourite part of any wedding? I’m going to cheat with this one as I have quite a few, but getting to meet and get to know a little bit about a once stranger, on one of the most important days of their life is pretty amazing. Meeting their family and friends and seeing their reactions once the gown goes on and full makeover is complete. From baby girl to bride. Also, I love receiving images from my past brides special days and seeing how loved up they and and a few special moments.
